Matt Kenseth falls out of top 16

Matt Kenseth's sojourn inside the top 16 in points was short-lived. He cut a tire on lap 190, pounded the wall, and finished 37th.

Positions 36 and higher pay only one championship point, so this dropped Kenseth from 13th following Las Vegas Motor Speedway to 20th in the standings. He is 21 points behind 16th-place Jimmie Johnson and the fight to get back into playoff contention will get more difficult with each passing week. Joe Gibbs Racing placed their other three drivers in the top 10 at Phoenix International Raceway, however, so Kenseth should be fine.
